Ovrfwrd: Beyond The Visible Light

Ovrfwrd is an instrumental progressive rock band hailing from Minneapolis. In the band are Mark Ilaug (electric and acoustic guitars), Kyle Lund (bass), Rikki Davenport (drums and percussion) and Chris Malmgren (Hammond B3, piano, keyboards). Beyond The Visible Light is the band's debut album. The name is derived from the words 'over forward' (with the vowels removed) with no hidden meaning as they just liked how it sounded. Although this is an instrumental album it almost wasn't the case as their prospective vocalist failed to show up at a recording session. Being instrumental has not hurt this music in the slightest as I found it an engaging listen through all five tracks. All the songs are over eight minutes in length totaling forty-seven minutes overall.

The album's first track "Can We Keep The Elephant?" has the band really firing on all cylinders with some excellent guitar riffs before a more tranquil moment unfolds with gentle acoustic guitar and peaceful keyboards. The intensity builds again with diverse chord structures and interesting guitar melodies. "Stones Of Temperance" begins with stark piano chords and slowly building guitar work. Eventually, heavier riffs ensue before pretty acoustic guitar and swells of textural synths add to the songs changing mood and atmosphere creating a riveting aural experience. "Raviji" is the album's longest track and is highlighted with superb guitar and piano interaction. Changing tempos and complex riff patterns really make this one a treat to listen to.

Beyond The Visible Light is an excellent album with not a duff track in the bunch. The lack of vocals didn't hurt one bit. Another band that has caught my attention in a big way. Highly recommended!

My Score:

OvrFwrd managed to capture the imagination to create your own kind of storyline with the roller coaster of instruments that are played at its finest. A fine kick back compilation of music to your ears :)
