When critics of the genre decry power metal as cheesy and trite I can only imagine that they have Freedom Call within their sights for they are and always have been way over the top in every conceivable way and crucially that is why they are such a pleasurable aural experience. Beyond comes after the 2013 compilation Ages of Light which had some hideous versions of the band's "hits" and Land of the Crimson Dawn which in retrospect I found a little disappointing.
Other than being slightly too long (and isn't practically every album these days) this is classic Freedom Call from the opening moments, "Jump and carry on, ride on for our Union of the Strong, raise your hands, hail for everyone, jump and carry on," we can tell that Chris Bay and his revolving line-up of henchmen are back doing what they do best – chest-thumping power metal in a relentlessly positive way. Looking for introspective shoegazing? Go elsewhere. Want to bang your head, sing along with ultra-infectious songs? Welcome in and enjoy tremendous fun all the way.
