Beyond-O-Matic: Relations At The Borders Between

Beyond-O-Matic is a space rock outfit based out of San Francisco and have been around since the early '90s. In 1999 the band broke up for a few years until 2004 and the release of Time To Get Up, their last album. That is until 2013, which saw the release of Relations At The Borders Between. The ten year gap hasn't stopped them from releasing a pretty cool space rock album.

In the band are Peter Fuhry (guitars, electric harp, melodica, effects, vocals), Kurt 'Stenzo' Stenzel (synthesizer, delays, effects) and Anthony Koutsos (cymbals, drums).

The album begins with two shorter tracks, "In The C' and "Tick Tock Rock" with the former taking its time to build into a more subdued synth laden jam while the latter features mostly synthesized vocals and serene effects and synths. It is not until the third track "Wish" that has the band breaking out into full-fledged space mode, all steady beats and shimmering synths, extending this one into a fifteen minute space jam. The next four tracks are all over ten minutes as well featuring higher pitched melodic vocals and extended slow paced psychedelic space excursions of swirling synths and guitar developed through an early '70s psychedelic haze.

There are hints of early Floyd scattered about but nowhere is this a carbon copy of that band. Recorded in just two days, Relations At The Borders Between is a fine example of improvised jam style space rock. Released on Trail Records.
