Kristina, Sonja: Sonja Kristina

Some of you may already be familiar with Sonja Kristina. She was the lead vocalist of the progressive rock band Curved Air from 1970 to 1976. In the late 70s she formed Sonja Kristina Escape while her husband Stewart Copeland formed The Police. Her band embraced the new wave phenomena and were quite popular on the club circuit. Her first album is a product of its time, when new wave was in full swing and progressive rock was in a steady decline in popularity. Even though the self-titled album is billed as a Sonja Kristina solo record it should really be a Sonja Kristina Escape album (according to the press release). So, what about the music?

This is a good pop/rock album with more than a slight nod to new wave and quite far removed from her work in Curved Air. Sonja has a great voice with enough emotion and verve to set these tunes apart from the typical fare. The album's first track "Street Run" is also one of the best with her unique voice and psychedelic guitar riffs leading the way. It is a fun upbeat tune and sets the tone for the rest of the album. "Man He Colour" is a little mellower with a folkier vibe while the last track "Fade Away" has a '60s cabaret/pop feel at times reminding me of pop icon Petula Clark. The catchiest song is probably the keyboard heavy "Breaking Out In Smiles", a sun shiny pop affair that could have been a hit single in its day. The most poignant song has to be "Colder Than A Rose In Snow", a tender ballad with pretty acoustic guitar and violin courtesy of Daryl Way.

This record really brought back a lot of memories of what I was listening to back in the day. It is not a perfect album and although it might sound a little dated it still holds up pretty well and gets a well-earned 3.5 stars.
