Spellkasters, The: Kastin' The Spell

The roots of The Spellkasters can be traced all the back to the '60s and the formation of The Pirates fronted by Mick Green. The band took on various formations over the years until Mick Green's untimely death in 2010. The Pirates' '90s rhythm section of Romek Parol (drums, percussion) and BJ Anders (bass, vocals) needed a new leader. Enter Pete Edmunds (guitar, harp, lead vocals) and The Spellkasters was born with their debut album titled Kastin' The Spell.

This is pure blues rock through and through filled with passion and soul. You won't find anything new here, just chugging blues riffs, driving beats and rough edged vocals which happen to be a perfect fit for this style of music. The album begins with the fiery blues rocker "Louise Louise" and the intensity doesn't let up until the last track is done. The last two tracks pay tribute to Mick Green, very appropriate indeed.

This is a fun listen and while it won't be considered a ground breaking achievement, the trio's heart is in the right place. If you like blues rock that fires on all cylinders you would do well to give Kastin' The Spell a spin.
