Tristanuevo: What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Weaker

Finland trio Tristan formed in 2004 by Tuomas Eirola and Tahvo Himanen along with saxophonist Mikko Viemerö. Viemerö has since left and with the addition of vocalist Anna Puhakka the band is now known as Tristanuevo. Guest musician Tytti Wirtanen adds cello. Eirloa (keyboards, vocals) and Himanen (drums, backing vocals) are good musicians and this is unlike any music I have heard in a long time. The band's motto is "Jazz up the disco" and while it does have a jazz vibe, I wouldn't necessarily call this dance music although they certainly do have a poppy side. The vocals are very 'jazzy' with that old school sultry style and the music has a minimalist quality but the absence of guitars is very noticeable. I will say adding cello was a good choice as it helps to fill in the soundscape with warmer tones.

The music is just okay for me. The songs are quite similar and the tempos do not change much although "On This Land" does pick up the pace and offers a little variety and the short "Broken Melody" ventures into the avant-garde. This is a tough nut to crack and while the keyboards, cello and drums are well played there just wasn't enough here to hold my interest. For progressive fans this will be a tough sell but those into jazz and pop might want to check out some samples to hear what Tristanuevo is all about.
