Clayton, Jim: Songs My Daughter Knows

Jim Clayton is a Canadian born pianist/composer with his latest offering being inspired by his daughter Eileen. The album was recorded in New Orleans where Clayton hired some well-known names in the world of jazz like Peter Harris (acoustic bass), Jason Marsalis (drums), Bill Summers (percussion) and Marlon Jordan (trumpet).

Songs My Daughter Knows is a melodic jazz fan's delight as Clayton has taken well known songs from the popular children's show Sesame Street and thrown in a few standards his young daughter has grown to love, making a record that is just nice to listen to. Songs like "Grouch Anthem" and the classic standard "Tea For Two" demonstrate Clayton's ear for melody as he weaves his scrumptious piano lines around the main theme. On the Adderley brother's penned "Inside Straight" Clayton takes a backseat to Jordan's outstanding trumpet work while "Flight Of The Foo Birds" has a swinging melody that had me hitting the repeat button more than once.

Songs My Daughter Knows is one of those jazz albums that just makes one feel good. It doesn't reinvent the wheel nor does it need to. Trust me, you don't have to be a kid to thoroughly enjoy this but it might make you feel like one. Recommended.
