Heresiarch: Węlwulf 7" EP

New Zealand black/death/doom act Heresiarch are back with their first release since 2011's Hammer of Intransigence, this time out it's a 7" EP titled Węlwulf. Consisting of just three songs, this one's over just as you really start to get into the crushing dirges of cavernous moans, massive riffs, and disturbing atmosphere. The title track really does combine the three styles well, as death metal riffs, faraway black metal groans, and a doom ideology take place, while "Abrecan" slows things down to a ominous, doomy crawl. Closing number "Endethraest" is pure maniacal death metal, the vocals so low in the mix that they almost become an afterthought as you get pummeled by the menacing riffs and pile-driver rhythms. Hardly refined but delicious in its brutality, Węlwulf is 13-minutes of raw extreme metal that is easy to recommend.
