Silent Images: Silent Images

This self titled, three track EP is the first venture from Swedish, multi-national Death/Metalcore four-piece Silent Images, where intelligent, if intelligible, lyrics are set around a collection of brutal riffs, a sprinkling of more considered guitar outbursts and some clever little breakdowns. Vocally things are pretty eclectic, the expected growls, screams and clean sections also interspersed with the odd spoken word passage. It's ambitious stuff, but still somehow safe and standard and while Silent Images show enough promise to suggest that these humble beginnings may well lead to something a little more substantial, recommending them over the plethora of bands currently operating in this area is a little challenging. Not because what is presented here is bad, far from it, but more that a polite production, previously owned guitar distillations and vocals which verge on perfunctory make for an engaging but forgettable experience.

That said, don't write Silent Images off, as this short debut provides something solid from which they may well build more individual and stretching ideas.
