Seven Deadly: Obliviation

Obliviation is the full length debut from Seven Deadly, where three tracks from an earlier EP and the single "Blood On Your Hands" are placed alongside a further eight songs which are brand and spanking. Support slots with Orange Goblin and an appearance at Download already have tongues a-wagging and while Obliviation doesn't quite win the struggle to stand out from the crowd, it does help explain the interest. As first steps go the twelve tracks here are pretty assured and with a mix of Metalcore, Melodic Metal and something a little more heritage, there's also an opportunity to snag followers both young and old.

While, as you'd expect in this day and age, the rhythms and beats hit hard and with precision, it is the combination of guitarist H Virdee, vocalist Archie Wilson and guitar-keyboarder Dave Irving which suggests, given time, that something of real worth may well emanate from Seven Deadly. It isn't quite there yet, but then neither are "Remain At Peace", "Play The Game", or "Life Begins To Fade" anything other than convincingly brutal romps which scream, swirl and jab their way into your mind. Unlike many operating in the more modern side of things, this isn't simply kiddie bothering angst and snarl, the ability and knowledge to employ deeper, more old school theories and then screamo them up, or add a scything edge, bringing a more authentic and less throwaway proposition. Not that Obliviation will make you exactly sit bolt upright and exclaim that you've never heard anything like it before, but there's certainly enough in evidence to snag a more traditional audience and have them standing shoulder to hoodie with the younger crowd.

If an album from a set of young wannabies who aren't afraid to step into modern territory, but who have a more obvious respect for the values of old, sounds interesting, then Seven Deadly should undoubtedly be on your radar.
