Chrome: Anthology 1979-1983

One of those freaky, stylish bands that crawled from the Earth's core 'round about the time that Jimmy Carter was on his way out of the White House and not too long in the grand scheme after the last helicopter had flown from Saigon, Chrome had some admirable rawness at its core. Inspired by the Stooges and, in more ways than you'd believe, the rough-edged Rolling Stones, this San Francisco-born outfit blended guitars with TV samples, Moog and tape loops. In some ways it comes across as what might have happened had Brian Eno been around Detroit around the time of the White Panther movement, though, again, it was much too late for that.

With songs such as "Zombie Warfare" (which features what may or may not be the sound of an electric razor played over a rockin' beat––imagine "Run Through The Jungle" coming together in a London dungeon), "March Of The Chrome Police (A Cold Clammy Bombing)," and "Meet You In The Subway," which capitalizes more on the band's synthesizer-driven rock, this 18-track outing serves as a document of a time that will never be again, no matter how hard the youth of today tries to recapture it.

While the overall sonic quality remains poor, as though the material was recorded in a subway on a broke down ghetto blaster, Anthology 1979-1983 is a good artifact for hardcore rock historians.
