Empire Of The Scourged: Transcend Into Oblivion

Empire Of The Scourged have lofty ambitions of stretching the boundaries that have been "suffocating this genre of extreme music" and to "genre defy". Those are big claims from a Dutch Avant-garde Industrial Death Metal act and a lot for their debut five track mini-album, Transcend Into Oblivion, to live up to. Have they therefore overstretched themselves with their own intentions? Well, undoubtedly, but still that's not to say that this collection of brutal guitar smashes lined up against high in the mix synths, samples, voices and grating guttural vocals (which sound almost like somebody shredding a didgeridoo - and the person playing it) is of no worth. Instead from the more straight forward "Der Wanderer Uber Dem Nebelsee", through to the more sounds and samples than guitars of "A Scared Horizon" this release becomes less and less Death Metal and more and more Extreme Industrial.

The vocals do begin to become a thorn in the side, although there are a variety of throat attacks employed across the tracks with varying degrees of success and the sampled beats and sounds do begin to wear thin. However there is an uncompromising dark-charm in the heart of what has been intended here and enough to illustrate that refusing to simply follow well worn paths could serve this band well. In the end what Empire Of The Scourged have created is a tough listen, yet one which rewards repeat visits. However to draw me back for more, the obvious weaknesses will require more than a mere tweak.
