Alterbeast: Immortal

As we've come to expect from the Unique Leader releases, Immortal sports some truly impressive cover artwork. This full length debut from California's technical death metal horde Alterbeast is an impressive affair, filled with all the brutality & complexity you would expect from an album of this nature. Comprised of Cam Rogers (Vocals), Rusty Cornell (Guitar), Andrew Lamb (Guitar), Michael Zamora (Bass), and Gabe Seeber ( Drums), the band come across as a well-oiled machine and they've put together a more than solid platter of molten metal here that shows their influences but still hits the mark.

Fans of Necrophagist, Morbid Angel, Death, Spawn of Possession, Decrepit Birth, Beneath the Massacre, Deeds of Flesh, and Black Dahlia Murder will certainly love all the zig-zagging, herky-jerky riffs and blazing solos flying about the mix from Cornell & Lamb. These guys just crush on tracks like "Vile Remnants" and "Ancient's Retribution", with Seeber's manic drum blasting keeping up every step of the way. Rogers delivers a wide array of growls, grunts, bellows, and screams, keeping things interesting at all times. Just check out his relentless barrage on opener "Flesh Bound Text" for a sampling of his assortment of venomous blasphemies. "Into Oblivion" just mashes with evil intent, and the effectively titled "Throne of Maggots" might just be the most brutal tune on the album, a furious slab of maniacal tech-death that pulls out all the stops. While Immortal might not be the most original sounding death metal album you'll hear in 2014, it's a damn good one, and a hot start for a band that I will be keeping a close eye on.
