Kamchatka: The Search Goes On

The Swedish hard rock trio known as Kamchatka are releasing their 5th studio album, titled The Search Goes On. This is my first experience with the band, but I am pretty familiar with their bassist/vocalist Per Wiberg, who has previously played organ with Opeth, Spiritual Beggars, and Candlemass. Rounding out the line-up is Tobias Strandvik on drums and Thomas 'Juneor' Andersson on guitar and vocals. This latest release is out on Despotz Records.

If you like classic '70s styled hard rock, The Search Goes On will definitely be something to seek out. Andersson's meaty, vintage styled licks will remind at times of Bonamassa, Trower, Marino, Page, Iommi, and McCarty, and the songs themselves capture the vibe of Led Zeppelin, Cactus, Humble Pie, Black Sabbath, Captain Beyond, Deep Purple, James Gang, Trapeze, and Grand Funk Railroad. Some of the highlights include "Coast to Coast", "Son of the Sea", "Somedays", and the gritty, almost Southern Rock-ish "Pressure". "Thank You For Your Time" isn't far removed from what fellow Swedes Graveyard and Witchcraft have been doing in recent years, and "Dragons" just boils and pulses with massive grooves, hot solos, passionate vocals and killer riffs. The vocals throughout the album actually are quite solid, with both Wiberg & Andersson proving to be quite capable singers, and again, contributing to the 'classic' vibe that permeates the entire album.

'70s styled bluesy hard rock is all the rage on The Search Goes On. Kamchatka have really done a great job honing in on that feel from the golden era, leaving us to wonder yet again, just what is in the water over there in Sweden?
