Not content to let Ghost, In Solitude, and Noctum grab all the Mercyful Fate-loving glory, Doom's Day return with their follow-up to last years The Unholy, another strong occult heavy metal offering, titled The Devil's Eyes. With some effective riffing, plenty of atmospheric passages, and a variety of vocal styles, The Devil's Eyes is pretty damn entertaining, if not ultimately all that original. Tunes such as "The Outsider", "The Offering", and "Cathedral of Lies" are dark yet somewhat catchy headbanging material, long on beefy riffs, tasty lead solos, and a mix of clean, gruff, moaning, and higher pitched vocals. Never quite approaching King Diamond styled theatrics, there are nevertheless well done. Some spooky organ seeps into the delightfully plodding "Watery Graves", while the title track takes on a more thrash styled delivery, again with that ominous organ showing up to add a bizarre element. The real kicker is the doom laden "Lost Soul", a blistering number with some of the best riffs on the album, and easily the highlight here.
Overall, this is a solid classic styled heavy metal album that's probably not going to set the world on fire, but is still well worth your attention.
