Hemer; Patrick: The End (Single)

Two years on from his debut solo album, More Than Meets The Eye, guitarist, songwriter, producer and now singer, Patrick Hemer is back with a single "The End". Personally, when I heard and reviewed More Than Meets... I discovered a virtuoso guitarist capable of combining melodic ideas to loftier, heavier ambitions through his fiery guitar playing. The album was good, without really being close to knock out stuff.

So according to Hemer, the reason for this stand alone release is that it holds little resemblance to what he's produced before and what is to come on his upcoming "100% Progressive Power Shred Metal!" second solo outing. In a way he's correct, with a more Symphonic and theatrical approach explored here, but with busy drums, a busier and long guitar solo and some far reaching, if not always completely convincing vocals, in the end this track is still Progressive Shred Metal, just with Symphonic leanings. Like what has come before from Hemer, if you are an aficionado of impressive and skilled guitar playing, then you'll find a lot about "The End" to get excited about. That said, there are a multitude of acts ploughing this particular furrow and in truth through more expressive vocalists and themes, doing so with more success. Hopefully album number two will have a bit more to get excited about.
