D – Defiance
R – Ruins
E – Escape
I – Beyond
That's basically what the concept of the album title is based on from these German space metal rockers. D:REI is the bands third album, and is all over the place stylistically speaking. At times I'm reminded of a heavier Hawkwind, or even Monster Magnet, but then they come back with some Rob Zombie/Korn styled groove metal, a little NWOBHM, as well as crushing doom not far removed from Black Sabbath or Saint Vitus. If you like huge, phat bass riffs to go alongside those crushing power chords, just check out "Way to Me" and "Give Gravitation to the People", and the psychedelic freakout that is "The Everlasting Circle of Infinity" contains some massive Tony Iommi inspired riffing to go along with sizzling Hendrix/Trower/Marino styled lead work.
The band has a few members contributing vocals, and to be honest, that's the only real weak part of D:REI, as some of the singing leaves something to be desired. That being said, there's a lot of variety here for anyone into some adventurous stoner, doom, space rock, and psychedelia.
