The Washington trio that call themselves Wild Throne (formerly known as Dog Shredder) are set to release their debut EP, titled Blood Maker. Comprised of Joshua Holland (Guitar / Vocals), Noah Burns (Drums), and Jeff Johnson (Bass), Wild Throne play a sort of hybrid modern metal/prog style that owes a little to bands like The Mars Volta and perhaps The Dillinger Escape Plan. Fairly raucous and noisy, Blood Maker does contain its share of melody as well, especially on the upbeat rocker "Shadow Deserts", where the band thrown in some hook laden atmospherics in between the herky jerky arrangements and Iron Maiden inspired guitar & bass interplay. The title track contains some massive riffing and frenzied soloing, though at times the vocals are just too overpowering. Overall I would have liked to hear even more of the melodic side of Holland's vocals, as when he's screaming it almost seems too high in the mix and leaves everything else buried in the background. Instrumentally though these guys have a lot on the ball, best heard on the manic opener "The Wrecking Ball Unchained", where their progressive metal side really comes out in full force. A solid EP, and a band to keep your eye on.
