Belladonna: Shooting Dice With God

Italian quintet Belladonna are the self-styled creators of their very own musical genre, Rock Noir. Certainly there is a lot that is unique about their sound which is decidedly hard to pigeon-hole; romantic, dark, melancholic, haunting and gothic are phrases that come to mind but whatever the classification the end result is decidedly pleasing on the ears. Shooting Dice With God is album number four from Belladonna who are now fast approaching the anniversary of their first decade as a band and the reception thus far to this latest release has been overwhelmingly positive and justifiably so.

Vocalist Luana Caraffa's seductive, breathless and heavily accented delivery is at the cornerstone of their sound, accompanied by some stirring piano led melodies and with the guitars making a much more understated and subtle contribution than is the norm in the sphere of Hard Rock. The mood is deeply cinematic and dark throughout, enhanced by the somewhat macabre lyrical themes that come through on 'Abduction' and 'In My Demons Name'. Aside from his contribution on guitars, Dani Macchi is both producer and songwriter-in-chief and he has crafted some excellent songs here, not least the dynamic lead single 'Karma Warrior' and groove laden 'Ishtar Blues'. Overall, Shooting Dice With God all adds up to a very intriguing release from a band that are undoubtedly on their way up.
