Ghost Avenue: Ghost Avenue

Norwegian melodic metallers that were formerly known as Ghost, the five piece made the wise decision to extend the name in 2013 and thus avoid confusion with Papa and his Nameless Ghouls. Forming back in 2002 Ghost Avenue have just a 2010 debut album to their name prior to this eponymous release that serves to re-launch the band and with their new identity.

Heavily Influenced by the 80's hard rock scene Ghost Avenue are proudly nostalgic. Check out these opening lines from the title track – Back in the seventies a seed was grown / and in the eighties a new wave was born / it came thundering down like heavy rain / with the speed of a freight train – and it is pretty clear what they are all about. Duelling twin guitars, wailing vocals and forceful rhythms are all topped off by some suitably cheesy lyrics and fairly one dimensional and uninspired titles such as 'Crazy Eyes', 'Out on the Street' and 'When The Going Gets Tough'. That said it is all executed well enough and there are plenty of catchy hooks and nifty solos to keep you interested and they are by no means the only band treading this familiar path. Whether they can come up with consistently strong material to break out of their homeland and onto the wider mainland European rock and metal circuit remains to be seen but this is a pretty solid release.
