East of the Wall: Redaction Artifacts

East of the Wall has always received a lot of positive attention and it's easy to see why. They play with high energy and passion and know how to blend an interesting progressive musical style with heavy metal gusto. I enjoyed this album from start to finish, but especially liked the tracks "The Correspondence Problem," "Obfuscator Dye," "The Fractal Canopy," and "Noir Filter."This is a strong album, one with several layers that will certainly reward multiple listens. The guitars—and this band has three of them—play some killer licks that are tight, interesting, and cool. Even better, this is one of those bands that seems to know what they are doing musically, bringing lots of richness to each passage, change, riff, and lick.

In the past, these guys were all instrumental. Since those beginnings, they've begun to add more vocals to their music with each release. I didn't mind the vocals too much, but I sometimes wanted to listen to the instrumental passages without them. At times, I thought that maybe East of the Wall could do what The Ocean did with Pelagial and release two versions of the album, one with vocals and one without. In any event, this album is a strong offering and should definitely please any fan of this style. As for me, this one is going on my playlist with The Ocean and Scale the Summit.
