Asomvel: Knuckle Duster

I doubt that Asomvel's song "Wrecking Ball" will get as much attention (or as much infamy) as the Miley Cyrus song of the same title. But Asomvel doesn't really need that kind of attention. They just keep doing what they do best—play classic metal. Besides, they have nothing to prove. These guys are the real deal—rock and roll tough guys ready to bring the house down.

In some ways, though, this album does represent a pretty big shift, at least in personnel. Former singer / bassist Jay-Jay Winter died tragically about a year after the band released their debut album Kamikaze. Finding the right singer took a while, but they did it. Better still, the new guy (Conan) was already a fan of Jay-Jay's attitude and wanted to keep things going without any major changes. The other band members still consider Jay-Jay a permanent part of the band, so it's probably good to leave things as they were. Nobody is quite ready to say goodbye.

As for the music, things are consistently strong, even great. Asomvel plays in the style of classic bands like Motorhead, but also bring to mind another great English band, Orange Goblin. I also heard a little bit of the mighty Speedwolf from time to time. In any event, the music doesn't need much description. This is classic bar-band metal, played in that big, late-night up-tempo style, the soundtrack to a great night out. Anyone who likes this style of heavy rock will love this album. I especially liked the anthem-like quality of songs like "Trash Talker," "Waster," and "Shoot Ya Down." Whatever you do, however, don't miss the opening track "Dead Set on Livin,'" an anthem to never giving up.
