Fun At The Morgue: Massoula

Massoula would appear to be the debut of Swiss Death Metal four-piece Fun At The Morgue (although amongst their number are members of Exulceration and Social Disaster), collecting together a selection of recordings from late 2012, with others polished up in March the next year. Apart from a few notable exceptions what Fun At The Morgue are all about is pretty straight forward Metal of Death, with a mix of foot to the floor sweaty hair flailings and slower more deliberate outbursts of anger and hatred. Nothing new but pretty decent nonetheless and with a rasping growler capable of hurtling with the same intensity as the music, there isn't a stand out feature holding this bunch back – apart from a less than original approach.

That all said, "Funeral Overture" opens what Fun At The Morgue bill as an EP (although the lines between EP and album seem to blur by the day) with a slower more Doom led outlook, while "Cadaveric Dead Bodied Slain Corpses Died The Dead Death Of Killing Doom" is a five second burst containing the lyrics 'And it hurt', revealing a keen, well executed sense of humour! To be fair "That's The Way (I Like Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida)" also offers a new twist on an old classic; the less frenetic attack suiting the band surprisingly well, while the Social Disaster cover "Lobotomie" reverts to type. However add in "Untitled, Bitch", which is one minute fifteen of silence and "Maykooy" which amounts to shouting, laughing and cymbal and drumstick clatters and simply too much of this already short release really becomes a self indulgent waste.

In the end it's hard to know what to make of Massoula. When it does the Death Metal, it is pretty standard stuff. When it stretches out things become more interesting. None of it is bad, yet much is unfocused in a way that detracts from the good work done.

Deathly fun indeed, yet Fun At The Morgue will need to work out where they go from here before completely convincing.
