The Finnish 'battle metal' warriors called Turisas are back with their latest release, titled Turisas 2013. It seems that the last few years has seen Turisas become somewhat of the 'flavor of the month' on the live circuit here in the states, with fans really digging on the costumes and warpaint as well as their somewhat unique style of metal. I've been on the fence, as a lot of what is see is pure gimmick and not a lot of substance. However, Turisas 2013 is a pretty solid affair, perhaps a little too much of the 'happy metal' styled fare that a lot of these bands lumped into the folk/pagan metal camp seem to partake in, but if you feel in the mood for some uplifting heavy metal long on sweeping keyboards and anthemic choruses, this is a good pick. There's not much here that's overly heavy, but man, those keyboard arrangements are very well done, and some of the vocal passages are huge in a sort of Blind Guardian/Kamelot way. Sure, some tracks are a tad over the top, but hey, "Piece By Piece", "Greek Fire", and "We Ride Together" are all galloping good fun, so if you enjoy the upbeat war themed power metal of say, Sabaton, you will surely get plenty of mileage out of this one.
