Neurotic November: Anunnaki

In the late 80s / early 90s, Florida was the home to some of most important and innovative death metal bands. Back then, the sound was fresh and the ideas were coming out fast. The albums produced in that period are now classics in a genre that shows no signs of slowing down. I only mention Florida because Neurotic November is also from there. Other than that they don't really have anything in common with classic bands like Death and Massacre. If listeners are as disappointed with this album as I was, they'll be glad to dust off some of the old classics and call it a day.

I realize that my bringing up Death is a little unfair. Neurotic November is closer to something like nu-metal or perhaps metalcore. Whatever they call it, the music here is regularly comprised of that all-too-familiar staccato rhythm so common to this style. At first, I thought the band might be headed in some interesting directions, but the music never really finds any solid footing. Instead, it roams around too much, drawing on this sound, that rhythm, and that popping bass line to fill up time. Some of the tracks ("Nonchalant" and "Parents," for example) even have rap sections. I like rap music, but these interludes do not sound good. Worse still, the lyrics are pretty juvenile and shameful.

I don't know much about this band, but I hope that they find a stronger footing for their future endeavors.
