Necrophobic: Womb of Lilithu

I'm still working on closing out 2013 in my reviews. The good news is that I still get to listen to some pretty good albums. The bad news, obviously, is that I feel behind on the latest news. As I turn my attention to Necrophobic, I feel obliged to note that the band recently fired their lead singer Tobias Sidegard after he was convicted of domestic abuse toward his wife and daughters and was sentenced to jail for six months. I don't know the details of the case (and I'm not interested in researching them at the moment), but I can only assume that Necrophobic will have to scramble to find a replacement. They are probably used to it. Since their beginnings in 1989, the band has had several lineup changes. I wish them luck in finding someone so they can hit the road.

The new album sounds good and certainly offers fans enough music to keep them busy while the band gets back on their feet. The music here is mostly good. The opening track (also the title track) is a short, moody, instrumental piece that I enjoyed. Things really take off, though, when "Splendour Nigri Solis" begins. Full of strong guitar riffing and rough vocals, the song gives the listeners what they've been expecting—the band's effective blend of Black and Death metal. Overall, I thought the music sounded strong on this album. I was especially fond of the guitar parts, especially the fluid and interesting solos. To me, there's nothing as good as listening to an old-school solo that blends melody with speed. I recommend checking out the solo on "Marchosias" and the solo parts on "Infinite Infernalis." They are nicely done. Necrophobic has a very solid bunch of musicians and they play really well. The vocals are pretty good, but I think a new singer will actually do them some good.

It's a shame that this album dropped right when the lead singer found himself on the wrong side of the law. The band has a good record on their hands, one that will be appreciated by those who take the time to discover it. Whatever the future holds for this band, I wish them well.
