Julian Angel's Beautiful Beast: Kick Down The Barricades
I may have mentioned before how instructive press releases can be…or not as is often the case. The first line of the press release for Kick Down The Barricades says, "Once again Julian Angel's Beautiful Beast has taken a ride on the time machine back to 1989." That pretty much sums up the situation. It's as if grunge never happened – and I for one wish it hadn't which is why I feel warmth towards what is very much a throwback album. In fact after my first listen, the very first thing I did was to pull up some Poison on the mp3 player and that says quite a lot as this is a pop metal glam fest.
"The Night Cries for You" is the huge ballad – lighters aloft for this one, opener "Bad Boys Never Dance" sets the scene in a rocking style very similar to the Scorpions' "Bad Boys Runnin' Wild" whilst "Big Stiff" wheels out the double-entendres which suggest that Mr Angel's tongue is firmly lodged in his cheek. Lyrically bad boys and girls run round the city and above all this is a fun album.
Back to the press release which says, "Julian Angel and Beautiful Beast don't reinvent the wheel. They simply keep it turning when others have run out of gasoline." In many ways, that's all you need to know.
