Kujanpää, Juha: Kivenpyörittäjä (Tales and Travels)
Juhu Kujanpää is a Finnish musician who has been around for a while now making a name for himself working on theater productions and film scores. He might not be a household name yet but after listening to his first solo album Tales and Travels, notoriety may be just around the corner.
The album is largely Finnish folk music with a heavy jazz influence and enough proggy touches to keep progressive fans happy. It is a pretty mellow album with not a lot of guitar crunch; a much folkier Camel came to mind. There are ten tracks in all, most inundated with superb strings courtesy of Tommi Asplund, Kukka Lehto, Esko Järvelä and Vesa Norilo. The guitar work of Timo Kämäräinen is also very good throughout particularly in the uplifting "Suomenmaa". His clean and thoughtful soloing really stands out on this one. Another highlight is the Nordic folk of "Kivenpyörittäjä" with stellar use of violin and another excellent guitar solo from Kämäräinen. The album loses a bit of steam towards the end bit this is still a fine listen overall.
For those seeking Scandinavian folk/jazz with proggy embellishments and nice melodies Kivenpyörittäjä should suit your fancy just fine.
