Jevtovic, Dusan: Am I Walking Wrong?

Dusan Jevtovic is a Serbian born guitarist and has just released his new album Am I Walking Wrong? . Joining Devtovic are Bernat Hernandez (bass) and Marko Djordjevic (drums). Am I Walking Wrong? is at first glance a guitar album, all heavy snarling riffs, laced with feedback and raw emotion. In the first four tracks that is exactly what you get; a powerful trio of drums, bass, and guitar playing with a freewheeling intensity that is usually reserved for live recordings. The fact this disc was recorded live in studio with no overdubs accounts for the trio's intense sound.

I think what makes his guitar playing so unique is you never know which direction the music will turn. In the blistering title track, off kilter rhythms are defined by a seemingly helter skelter approach with the riffs attacking from all angles. It initially sounds somewhat haphazard but there is a method behind his madness. With the introspective "In The Last Moment II", the trio slow it down, allowing for a more atmospheric sound as Jevtovic's mood filled notes slide over the rhythm section's slinky groove. The album's next two tracks just might be the proggiest here. "Embracing Simplicity" builds slowly with a restrained sound before the riffs become more forceful and the drumming more bold. The abstract guitar excursions remind me of Robert Fripp's work with King Crimson in the mid '70s. "Third Life" has a tranquil start as Jevtovic's clean guitar chords chime clearly and as the moody soundscape evolves, the trio's electronic side takes over, exploring new territories with interesting results.

Am I Walking Wrong? is a fine example of guitar led heavy rock/fusion that progressive minded music fans should really appreciate. For something a little outside the box give this one a try.
