Australasia is an Italian band firmly entrenched in the post rock/metal genre. Vertebra is the band's first full length release having put out an EP entitled Sin4tr4 in 2012. They are led by multi-instrumentalist Gian Spalluto and I have to say he does a very nice job. Other musicians include Mina Carlucci and Giuseppe Argentiero. The album is almost entirely instrumental except for the occasional backing vocal.
The slow building "Aorta" sets the tone for the album with well-placed piano filled rhythms leading to heavier riffage and nice backing vocals. The music can be quite dramatic but not overly so. "Vostok" carries a similar vibe; quite melancholic with slow, heavy riffs, and acoustic moments mixed in adding that little bit of much needed contrast. One of my favourites is the melodic "Zero". The production is excellent with lighter moodier builds and heavier buzz filled riffs. "Antenna" has a Coldplay feel, although quite a bit heavier while the short lived "Deficit" incorporates electronic elements adding a new wave flavour to the band's post rock sound.
Although short by today's standards, the album clocks in around thirty-five minutes, this is a nice slice of post rock that should hold much appeal for fans of the genre.
