Cokegoat: Vessel

From Chicago comes Cokegoat, a band with one truly ridiculous name, but, there's nothing silly about their brand of crushing death/doom metal. Vessel is a pretty heavy slice of sludge laden doomy death metal with some hardcore influences, and from start to finish there's barely a moment for subtlety so expect a pulverizing affair. "Buried in the City" absolutely smokes with mean intent and massive riffage, while the two part "End of Your Life" mixes in some space age prog effects for good measure in the middle of all the destructive riffs and violent vocals. "Glorious Dead" is thunderous, and a tune that shows off just how well the production worked to get these huge riffs sounding as pulverizing as possible. The vocals throughout lean more towards the hardcore/sludge/deathcore side of things, which might turn off some folks, and truth be told I found them to be the weakest part of Vessel, though they aren't bad by any means. Overall this is some heavy hitting stuff, odd at times, but certainly worth checking out if you are in the mood for crushing sounds that smash though multiple sub-genres.
