Daniels, Neil: High Stakes & Dangerous Men – The UFO Story (Book)
After tackling the story of Pantera for his last book, prolific music author and journalist Neil Daniels crosses back over the Atlantic for the subject matter of his current release. As is pointed out throughout the text UFO are both much admired and much underrated within rock circles and their story has been littered with triumph, tragedy, break-ups and reunions. Whilst all of this makes for interesting reading what really lifts High Stakes & Dangerous Men above the average rock band biography is the authors' appreciation for the great music the band created over the decades (and indeed still are with recent albums such as The Visitor and Seven Deadly). The under appreciated Paul Chapman era is well featured along with some of their more obscure 90's albums and the reader is left in no doubt there is much more to UFO than merely Strangers In The Night.
Interviewees include past members Neil Carter, Danny Peyronel and Clive Edwards amongst others together with an assortment of producers and individuals who have worked closely with UFO through the years. In common with his other work Daniels ensures that the voices of Mogg, Way, Schenker, Raymond and Parker are heard by drawing on their numerous conversations with the music press for quotes. It all makes for a very satisfying end result and will hopefully encourage renewed interest in the story and music of this marvellous band.
