Weeping Silence: For the Unsung

Malta doom metal band Weeping Silence is back with a new album For the Unsung. Weeping Silence is made up of Diane Camenzuli, on lead vocals; Dario Pace Taliana, on vocals and backing vocals; Mario Ellul, on guitars; Manuel Spiteri, on guitars; Sean Pollacco, on bass; Alison Ellul, on keyboards; and Angelo Zammit, on drums.

Diane Camenzuli replaces Rachel Grech on lead vocals to give this band a new sound which you can hear immediately in the bold bass and cello two minute opener "Mourning Sighs Farewell" It is a deep emotional jump into this new direction for the band. Much more symphonic and filled with deep keyboards and Camenzuli's purring voice.

"Love Lies Bleeding" is not the Elton John classic by a long shot. In fact, it is the beginning of the end for me. Camenzuli's beautiful voice cries to rise above Taliana's growling vocals. It is a shame. Camenzuli is doing a fantastic job of emotional lifting soprano, but Taliana's growling only takes away from the elegant sound.

Unfortunately it just gets worse before it gets better near the end. Taliana's growling destroys an otherwise brilliant album of excellent keys, guitars, bass, and drums. Camenzuli's voice is a welcome addition when it can be heard solo.

If you can listen through the growling there is some great theatrical music being performed. Maybe the next one will have considerably less growling. Otherwise, I'm crossing this promising band off my Watch List.
