Dark Intervals: The Flow

Dark Intervals is a solo music project created by Finnish musician Ilkka Harjula. The Flow is the debut album for the project. Muti-instrumentalist Ilkka Harjula started playing piano at the age of five. By the age of 13 he added electric guitar and soon after that he added drums for a local band to the list of instruments he could master. Classical guitar is also an instrument Harjula plays well.

Accompanying Harjula in the band is Margit Tornio a Finnish singer and vocal coach. She began her studies in music playing violin at the age of six. She started studying singing at the age of 15. She has played synthesizer and sung backing vocals in a band called Re-Pulse. Tornio also participated in the Metal Battle in Wacken Open Air back in 2006.

"The title Dark Intervals is a homage to Keith Jarrett, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all times" (http://www.darkintervals.fi/index.html, 2013).

The Flow is a great debut album full of Margit Tornio's excellent vocals and all of Ilkka Harjula's instrumental mastering. The album is full is full of dark themes and powerful keys, guitars, bass and drums. All eight tracks are full of instrumental highlights with Tornio's vocals the solid recurring standard and presence.

"Incoherence", with its excellent guitar work, the band named track "Dark Intervals", and the cool keyboard opening to the title track, "The Flow" and "Winter Thoughts" keyboards were my favorite highlights.

This band is definitely on my Watch List now.
