Bone Cave Ballet: Will of the Waves

Bone Cave Ballet is a Seattle female-fronted prog metal band whose debut album The Echo of Entropy in 2009 was well received by critics and fans alike. The band is led by the soft and beautiful vocals of Jacqui Gilroy, who also plays a mean guitar. Kelly Mynes plays drums; Ezekiel Lords, plays bass; and Jeff Blancato plays guitar and sings backing vocals. The band has been creating music since 2008.

Gilroy's Kim Deal-like Breeders' vocals sounds great matched with that progressive beat, rhythm and the sound the band creates. I don't hear the Yes comparisons other critics are referencing. I hear more of the '90s Breeders' sound. (Which is absolutely not a bad thing at all). In fact, the Breeders were one of my favorite bands from that soft punk sound.

Five tracks timed at less than six and a half minutes will not get you compared to the album long Yes catalog I am well aware of and love. But this Seattle band is making their own sound and may be one of the best from the progressive genre in the Seattle area. "Breakup Yoga" is also not the kind of title you would associate with Yes either, but it does sound great as a Breeders' rocker.

"Shape to Stay" opens as one of the most promising songs on the album with Gilroy's best vocals and some interesting guitar work.

No powerful tracks like "Cannonball" here though. A good album with an interesting new and original sound. But nothing that shatters glass or puts this band on the map for me. Being a Seattle music fan I was so hoping for this to really knock me off my feet. But, I'm still standing…and waiting for something big in the progressive rock arena from my favorite city.
