Finnish retro rockers Whipping Post have been around for a decade or so with their 70's soaked rawk n roll anthems that shares its musical DNA with likes of The Faces, The Allmans (seemingly the band that gave them their moniker) and many more. Clearly they are just one of numerous bands paying homage to this golden era but what they may lack in originality is more than made up in execution, attitude and spark all of which Whipping Post possess in abundance.
They may not be reinventing the wheel but there is much to embrace about The Cat O Nine Tales not least the stone cold classic laid back blues rock fusion of 'Cold November Rain' which is a mighty fine way to close an album that oozes class and quality from the moment they slip into the groove of rabble rousing stomping opener 'Devil Lady'. Pretty much everything else in between continues in similar vein with a commanding authority and the fact that they are a band that loves what they do is more than evident. They also mix it up with the windswept ballad 'Sailing Away' followed by the insistent bounce 'At 7 PM' which itself gives way to the hard edged 'Heart of Darkness'. Overall then, a very enjoyable release from a band that would be sure to go down a storm on the European festival circuit.
