You know, I had to slap myself a few times while listening to Primitive Age to make sure that someone didn't spike my drink and casually slip in some long lost Venom album just to fuck with my head a little. Bat is the union of Municipal Waste guitarist Ryan Waste on bass/vocals, former DRI drummer Felix Griffin, and Volture guitarist Nick Poulos, and they've taken a step back in time to the early '80s on this 13-minute EP Primitive Age. Yeah, this is early Venom, Motorhead, and Hellhammer worship ladies and gentleman, with a frantic punk/hardcore/thrash edge, as if some forgotten recording from the old tape trading days got released from a crusty vault and an new discovery has been born. Quick and to the point, Primitive Age is infectious and fun, riffs flying all over the place but simple, pounding drums & bass, and Waste's vocals squarely in the vein of Cronos of Venom & Celtic Frost's Tom G. Warrior. "Rule of the Beast", "Code Rude", "BAT", and the title track are just kick ass metal tracks that are over just as you really start to get into them, but this EP is so short you can't help but play it over and over again.
Overall this is a fun trip back to the early '80s metal scene, and I'd love to hear more from these guys in the very near future.
