Kalmah: Seventh Swamphony

This album came out back in June, but didn't come to my attention until recently. For some readers, then, my review will either confirm their feelings that this is a strong album or cause them to shrug their shoulders, having ignored the album in the first place. Still, for those who haven't discovered this latest from Kalmah, I'd like to be the first to suggest that this is an album worth checking out.

Kalmah has been going strong for nearly 15 years, putting out new releases every 2-3 years. They have a strong reputation for writing consistently strong music that effectively blends death metal and symphonic metal. To me, there's also a healthy dose of thrash here and there, giving the music that little extra kick of speed and aggression. I also enjoyed the old school guitar solos, complete with the obligatory flashy licks and polished melodic passages.

This is a strong album, one worth checking out. Fans of Kalmah will certainly enjoy it and newcomers will find this to be an effective introduction to a killer band. I recommend especially the first half of the album, especially "Pikemaster," a fun and exciting blast of symphonic death metal energy. "Hollo," a slightly mellower, slightly more melodic track, was also a highlight for me.
