Lodz: Something in Us Died

This is a disc of atmospheric metal, sort of gloomy and mostly mid to slow tempo. Vocals vary between growled and operatic, and the overall sound of the disc is huge. The engineering is very nicely done, and it captures the full sound spectrum so that the highs are high and lows really low; you feel this in your gut. The PR release notes that this has similarities to Cult of Luna, and indeed the engineering was done by Magnus Lindberg of that band. One if the problems I have with this disc is that the songs don't really vary too much from each other; they are heavy, but I also sense that played live this would be a memorable experience. One of the stand out songs to me is "Leading the Rats." This has both growled vocals in the heaviest parts, but standard vocals in some of the slower parts. While slow, it pummels you. For those who love this style of music, there is much to admire.
