Dream Theater: Live at Luna Park (Blu-ray/3 CD)

Filmed & recorded in August 2012 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Live at Luna Park is another in a very long line of excellent Dream Theater concert video releases. So, if you own all the others, why purchase another you might ask? Well, for one, this is the first featuring new drummer Mike Mangini (now with the band for three years), it's available in high-definition, and if you look over the setlist you'll see some songs that are not on the previous concert releases. Then again, if you are familiar with Dream Theater, you are already aware that the band loves to mix up their setlists from tour to tour, and even show to show. Live at Luna Park is no exception, and it's a compelling watch, showing that the band are recharged with Mangini in tow, and enjoying playing new songs off the then just released A Dramatic Turn of Events.

The camera work and overall production of the visuals are outstanding here, so you'll feel like you are in the front row soaking it all in. The mix is spot on for the most part (though I detected James LaBrie buried a bit on the first few songs), so this is a good Blu-ray to use to show off your home theater system. As I mentioned, the band is as tight as ever here, with highlights being a crushingly heavy "Dark Eternal Light" (great monster movie visuals, included Gamera on this one), "Breaking All Illusions" (featuring some great John Petrucci guitar work), "Bridges in the Sky", "The Root of All Evil", a poignant "The Silent Man", and a great "A Fortune in Lies", one of their earliest gems. Mangini is a monster throughout, and even contributes a killer drum solo, displaying a technique that arguably even surpasses the departed Mike Portnoy. As if the 20 track setlist isn't enough, there are 6 additional bonus tracks (the band played 2 shows at the venue, so these are probably tunes that didn't make the main set due to time restrictions on the video channel or were played one night and not the other), including a wonderful "Wait for Sleep" and supercharged "Caught in a Web" and "Pull Me Under". Included in the expanded digipack set are 3 CDs containing the entire concert as well, which is perfect for loading up on your ipod as well as playing in the car.

The documentary is a lot of fun, as the band gets to talk about bringing Mangini into the band, the tour, and other band related and behind the scenes topics. With the recent release of the bands new self-titled album, and now this stellar live set, there's plenty of Dream Theater product on the market to hold us over till the upcoming World tour commences.
