Synth wizard and electronic music pioneer Vangelis has a vast discography and is currently having a number of his albums re-mastered and sonically enhanced wrapped in deluxe digi-pack format via Esoteric, an imprint of Cherry Red Records. Direct was first released in 1988 via Arista and the clue to the composition of the album is in the title with recording taking place as the pieces were created, thus leading to a true feeling of spontaneity with little in the way of overdubbing taking place afterwards. Planned as the first in a series of works that would result in true sonic exploration, Vangelis instead opted to go in a different direction with future releases hence this is the only album that follows the format.
Almost entirely instrumental the track lengths are relatively short in length compared with some of his 70's albums giving an accessible feeling throughout. Operatic female vocals are put to good use on the sweeping 'Glorianna' and there is a warm, romantic vibe to the atmospheric swathes of layered synths on the huge sounding 'Dial Out'. The captivating, hypnotic rhythm and celestial flourish of the closing 'Intergalactic Radio Station' results in another stand out track although there is rarely a dull moment here. In truth, Direct could only have been recorded in the 1980's with its New Age atmospherics very much at the forefront of the overall sound and it has proven to be an album that divides opinion amongst his fan base. But for anyone who loved his work on Blade Runner then this is well worth seeking out.
