Scordatura: Torment of the Weak

Scortadura, the Scottish band with an Italian name, seems poised to take the UK death metal scene by storm. Together since 2007, the band has already released a steady stream of demos, one EP, and a live recording. I haven't heard the live album, but I have to hand it to these guys—it takes some real confidence to put out a live recording before introducing new fans to an extended body of work.

The music on this album is energetic, aggressive, and bold. Even though it fits squarely into death metal musical styles, it has a lot more energy and drive than I've heard in a long time. Simply put, this band means every note and they play like they have nothing left to lose. I was especially struck by the alternating shrieks and growls of the vocals. I often get tired of incomprehensible vocal styles, but this band performs them with so much energy I felt like I was rediscovering just what this kind of aggressive vocal bombast can really do. Unlike other bands that simply reproduce what other bands have done, these guys behave as though they've just discovered death metal and want to share it with the world. Their message is pretty convincing. Give this one a spin.
