Royal Hunt: A Life to Die For

A Life to Die For is the 12th Royal Hunt studio album and is the follow up to Show Me How To Live, an album which marked the return in the line-up of US singer DC Cooper. He is the trademark vocalist of the two. A Life to Die For is, "a concept album not in the lyrical sense but musically, which sees the band expand their musical boundaries and bring their symphonic and grandiose musical element to the max employing a large number of classical/orchestra players in the studio as well as a large choir!"

In my review of Show Me How to Live I said, "In fact, my major (only) gripe with this album is that there are only seven songs – I could have easily managed another couple – it's that good." I'm mostly of the same opinion here as well as Andre Andersen and his cohorts (Cooper, Allan Sorensen on drums, bassist Andreas Passmark with guitarist Jonas Larsen) have produced a bombastic, overblown yet accessible album typified by the hugely enjoyable "A Bullet's Tale". Occasionally the sound of the record and the keyboards especially feels a little anachronistic but this is an entirely solid entry into the Hunt canon. In other news, "Running Out of Tears" is one of the most European sounding songs I have heard in quite a while. There's a phrase I can't explain any better but give it a listen and I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

The album comes with a bonus DVD shot during the band's last tour. It apparently features plenty of interviews and live music is included. Sadly this wasn't available for review but should add some added value to the package.
