Mutation: Error 500

Well, now, this is all over the map. And it's all the better for it. Mutation is made up of past members of Napalm Death, the Wildhearts, and Cardiacs, plus this disc also includes the talents of both Merzbow and Mark E. Smith. So you know it is going to be really noisy, and it is. Interestingly, it is more a controlled noise, focused down to laser sharpness. And at times, it is a combination of binaries- growling male vocals with ethereal female vocals. This is not music that pulverizes you into submission. It has that energy, but it harnesses it for the compositions.

Guitars are kept trebly, and the engineering shies away from providing depth; this is much more processed. So this is angular and fractured. Songs move through all sorts of changes in style, sometimes in the course of just a few minutes. The press release uses the word "random" to describe the music, and I think this is highly correct. This is random in the sense that there is no real way to predict the course of any composition. "Mutation," for example, would not sounds out of place on a mutant Devo record; it has the Mark Mothersbaugh vocal styling down perfectly. "Bracken" is more traditionally grindcore in nature. "Sun of White Leg' is a song that does try to beat you into submission.

This is not always my cup of tea, but I am impressed by the commitment and musicality these folk bring to an extreme style of music. Nicely done!
