Promethium: Origins

Origins offers up a slice of modern metal with plenty of groove, bite and attitude from Promethium, a quintet based in the North West of England. Impressive debut album Welcome To The Institution was issued back in 2010 and this much anticipated follow-up comes courtesy of the band having been signed to a new record label in Sky Rocket Records. Aggressive riffing, strong and insistent choruses and well executed solos are pretty much par for the course with this album and the band have also paid careful attention to getting things right in the songwriting department. The likes of 'Rain' and 'Plagued by Evil' evidence some clever changes of tempo alongside a dark and sinister vibe to the lyrics that complements the metallic assault of twin guitarists Daniel Lovett-Horn and Rossi. Vocalist Gary McGahon opts for a clean approach which is accompanied by some gruff growling on 'The Art of Hurting' and 'Gunslinger'; numerous bands try this dual vocal style and it doesn't always work but Promethium pull it off without resorting to cliché. Closing the album with the title track, a hypnotic and dramatic instrumental, is another nice touch and the running time of around forty minutes keep this in old school vinyl territory of being concise, sharp and to the point.

A consistent set of songs that deserves to see Promethium rewarded with some decent festival slots and a widening of their fan base, Origins comes highly recommended.
