This is another release from Avenue of Allies which seems to be hoping that it is 1985 all over again. Obviously it never will be and melodic AOR (especially of the type purveyed by The Theander Expression) is a total commercial dodo. Having said that, Andrée Theander along with Christian Hedgren – Lead vocals on tracks 1-3 and 7-9; Göran Edman – Lead and backing vocals on tracks 4-6 and 10, backing vocals on tracks 3, 7 and 9; Michael Ottosson – Keyboards; Linus Abrahamson – Bass; Herman Furin – Drums and percussion; Peter Gardemar – Violin and viola on track 9; Ylva Nilsson – Cello on track 9; Philip Magnusson – Backing vocals on tracks 1, 2, 4, and 7; Elin Åkesson – Backing vocals on tracks 6 and 10 have created a very nice retro styled album.
The obvious strength is the quality of the songs which are uniformly tightly constructed and in a different time would have possibly been sizeable hits. "Sanguine" for instance is insanely good as indeed is "Mr. Know-it-all" where I imagine Mr. Theander is writing from personal experience.The other thing to note is how much vocalist Christian Hedgren sounds like Tommy Shaw at various points.
