Flying Circus: Ones and Zeros

Flying Circus is a German progressive rock band and have been around for over two decades. I don't think they have been given the credit they deserve as they are still not a house hold name in prog rock circles. Their last album Back & Forth (2010) was excellent so I was looking forward to cueing up their latest creation Ones and Zeros, an EP to wet our appetites before a full length album is released which should happen fairly soon.

The band has a new line-up as Rüdiger Blömer (organ, e-piano, acoustic violin, strings) and Ande Roderigo (drums) have been added, joining members Michael Dorp (lead and backing vocals, orchestral drum loop), Michael Rick (electric and acoustic guitar) and Roger Weitz (bass guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, percussion loop).

I like all six tunes, whether it's the straight ahead rock of "Fire" or the interesting remake of the Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black". My favourites are "Hero in Disguise" with its excellent guitar and organ work and the proggy "Back to the City" with interesting vocals and wonderful mix of acoustic and electric guitar. The guitar playing is excellent throughout the album. Just listen to the short "The Red Door" for a prime example.

Also of note is the booklet; very tasteful and professional with nice photography, lyrics and short anecdotes on every song.

If you are familiar with the band you should dig Ones and Zeros. If not, give Flying Circus a try and discover a band that deserves to be heard.
