Lantern: Rock 'n' Roll Rorschach

This is a fun album, the kind that is best discovered by listening to it, not by reading about it. Despite that, I really want to write a few things about it, maybe even try to convince readers that this album is well worth checking out. The music here is best described as a strong and exciting blend of psychedelic rock, classic rock, and the independent sensibilities of punk rock. Lots of reviewers have already pointed out the band's obvious borrowings from the Stooges and the Velvet Underground. I agree with those comparisons, though I want to stress the even deeper connections to big and beefy rock and roll, the kind that took what Elvis and the Beatles did and made it rough, edgy, and dirty. To put it another way, these guys sound like the Stooges, but they also keep their Led Zeppelin albums close at hand. What I liked about this album, though, was the way the band brings to the fore the bigness of the music, the sheer exuberance of playing rock music.

It turns out that Lantern has a few shorter releases out there—EPs and cassettes—but this is their first full-length album. As a kind of debut or introduction, it should open plenty of doors for the band and give listeners plenty to enjoy. Even better, the album sounds great. I suggest listeners check out tracks like "Evil Eye," "The Conjurer" and "Out of Our Heads." Most of the tracks are just as good, but those stood out to me as the best way to get to know this new and exciting band.
