Toxic Holocaust: Chemistry of Consciousness

All I really need to say is this: Toxic Holocaust is awesome and this album delivers the goods from start to finish. As always, Joel Grind and his bandmates deliver thirty minutes of punk-infused thrash metal that never slows down, never gives up, and never disappoints. Interested readers should just grab the CD, select any song at random, sit back, and soak in the deep and powerful riffs. The guitar playing chugs and wails and marches and thrashes just like all great heavy metal should. Even better, Grind's vocals sound better than ever. I have no doubt that long-term fans will love this one; newcomers (where have you all been?) will finally discover what they've been missing.

Musically, Grind sticks to what works—thrash metal that simply refuses to forget the influence of punk rock. If anything, this album has even more punk influence operating behind the scenes. To me, the music actually sounded more aggressive than previous release. According to Grind, he did allow himself an extra helping of punk rock here, adding to it a somewhat stronger lyrical emphasis on social and political themes. Don't worry, though; this album isn't some mindless screed against everything Grind hates. Instead, it simply provides a means to think about the kinds of questions most of us are asking these days anyway. The world is a pretty crazy place and sometimes it helps to stop and think about some of the reasons why. In any event, the lyrics aren't the reason why fans keep coming back for more. It's the power of the music. With this release, we have thirty more minutes of what Grind and the boys do best.
