Saint Vitus: Die Healing (reissue)

Season of Mist has recently reissued a couple of forgotten classics from doom/sludge kingpins Saint Vitus, and here we are going to take a look at 1995's Die Healing. Original vocalist Scott Reagers rejoined the band for this album alongside longtime members Dave Chandler (guitar), Mark Adams (bass) and the late Armando Acosta (drums).

Tons of massive riffs and scorching wah-wah solos from Chandler throughout this one, each tune plodding along with deliciously doomy menace that this band is so good at delivering. Seriously, if you love psychedelic, screaming distorted wah-wah solos, you've come to the right place. "One Mind", "Let the End Begin", and "Sloth" are just wild songs that really hit the mark, with Reagers sounding like a demented, heavy metal version of Jim Morrison. Crushing dirges like "Return of the Zombie" and "Trail of Pestilence" offer behemoth waves of distorted & feedback drenched riff-o-rama, and "In the Asylum" is just plain creepy as hell, as Reagers plays the part of the crazed, tortured inmate perfectly as the wah-wah guitar leads stab in and out of the mix.

Though most of the songs are lengthy doom death marches, a couple pick up the pace a bit so the album isn't one long dirge, which makes for a pleasing listen. If you didn't discover this one back in '95, make sure you do yourself a favor and check it out now.
